jellyfish-close-up-3

Artist Statment

My inspiration comes from deep sea jelly fish. The key area of interest is how jellyfish cluster together in large groups and the impact visually this creates. Looking in detail at the individual jellyfish, I have observed details such as their tentacles which fascinate me. I have also observed the shapes and the transparency of the materials. My research has incorporated a number of sources including a book called The Deep, youtube videos and visits to aquariums. From this research I make drawings and this helps me to understand the forms.
The material I use to create the jellyfish shapes and transparency is monofilaments and colored copper wire. This gives me the translucent effect that I want and it is also flexible to use . It is the colored copper wire that gives me the shape that i want as i double line crochet the monofilament and wire together. The colour of my objects are inspired by my subject matter (sea creatures), and I use, blues, greens and purples, ect and incorporate these colours all together. I display my work by hanging them in groups at different heights color and so my adience can walk through them. I also add small LED lights to my sea creatures to add the aspect of life to them and creats ambient lighting.
